What is Manual Lymph Drainage Therapy?

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a form of bodywork that addresses the body's lymph circulatory system of the body.

Manual Lymph Drainage:

  • Reduces inflammation,
  • Reduces swelling,
  • Speeds healing,
  • Relieves pain,
  • Bolsters immune function,
  • Detoxifies tissues
  • Promotes tissue regeneration post surgery, and
  • Is a part of the support system for people with lymphedema.

Manual Lymph Drainage is:

  • NOT a replacement for medical attention, and
  • NOT a cure for Lymphedema.

The lymph system is comprised of special lymph nodes and vessels that circulate immune cells and other substances through our system.  It's healthy functioning is vital for proper immune and cellular activity.   Fluid is pumped through tiny lymph vessels by contractions of small muscles.  Hormones, proteins, and fatty acids travel through this network, as do waste products and toxins.

When this system degenerates through illness, surgery, injury, infection or inflammation, then cellular function is compromised. This can lead to slower recovery and sometimes profound swelling.

Manual Lymph Drainage has proved effective in reducing swelling and improving quality of life in instances of dramatic edema after cancer treatments.  By recirculating body fluids, tissues are detoxified, edema dissipates, pain and inflammation are reduced and the immune system is bolstered.

Manual Lymph Drainage is performed by massage therapists who have completed special training in the anatomy of the lymph system.  They use very light pressure in a series of circular skin stretching movements to speed the healing process.

Manual Lymph Drainage is performed in medical settings to facilitate recovery from illness or injury but is also a minimally invasive way to support your general health in the absence of disease.

Developed by Frederic Millard, an osteopathic physician, and Emil Vodder, a massage therapist, Manual Lymph Drainage is recognized as an effective treatment and preventative measure the world over.
